React to a message in a group and only the author sees it. A quiet "that was kind" without turning it into an event for eleven other people.

Every other messenger broadcasts reactions to the whole conversation. None offer a reaction meant for one person inside a group.

How it works

  • The reaction picker gets one toggle: send to everyone, or just to them.
  • A private reaction is sent only to the author's devices. The other members never receive it.
  • The author's copy is marked as private, so they know it was not shown to the group.
  • Private reactions are never folded into the public tally, on either side.

Rules this encodes

  • Private by not sending, never by hiding. A flag that asks other clients not to display something is a request, not a guarantee: a modified client, or a future version that forgets, shows it anyway. The only privacy that holds is an envelope that was never sent.
  • The author sees who reacted, exactly as they do now. This is one-to-one, not anonymous.
  • In a one-to-one conversation the toggle is meaningless and is not shown.
